The Story

The Person Everyone Could Count On

Marcus had worked for the same company for nearly nine years. He knew the systems, completed what was assigned, and rarely complained.

When coworkers were out, Marcus covered. When deadlines tightened, Marcus stayed later. When someone needed help, Marcus usually figured out a practical way to make it work.

Then responsibilities began piling up. One employee left. Another transferred. Temporary assignments became permanent. Marcus shortened lunches, worked longer, and even logged back in after dinner.

Each request seemed manageable by itself. So Marcus kept saying the same thing:

“Okay.”
His reliability was still a strength. But people had begun assuming Marcus was managing because he never told them otherwise.
What Was Beneath It

His Heart Needed Direction

Marcus was not simply saying, “I don’t want more work.” Something deeper was being affected.

Direction (Control)
“Am I Safe?”

Marcus functions best when responsibilities, priorities, expectations, and boundaries are clear enough for him to know what he is accountable for carrying.

What Marcus Needed

  • Clear priorities
  • Realistic expectations
  • Defined responsibilities
  • Room to communicate capacity honestly

What Marcus Did Instead

  • Stayed quiet
  • Adjusted again
  • Hoped someone would notice
  • Carried frustration nobody knew existed
Other people could respond to what Marcus communicated. They could not be expected to interpret needs he continually kept hidden.
Temperament & Design

When Calmness Becomes Over-Accommodation

God-Given Strengths

  • Calm under pressure
  • Patience
  • Practical thinking
  • Flexibility
  • Steadiness when others are reactive

Elastic Stretch™

  • Calmness can hide a real problem
  • Flexibility can become silent accommodation
  • Patience can turn into tolerating too much for too long
  • Conserving energy can become avoiding a difficult conversation
  • Cooperation can become carrying responsibilities that were never clarified
Elastic Stretch™ helped Marcus see that a strength can become strained when it keeps him from responding honestly to what is happening.
Rubber Band Method™

Marcus's Silence–Accommodation Cycle

👀Recognize the problem — Marcus sees that his workload is too heavy
🤐Stay quiet — “It's easier to just handle it.”
📦Accommodate — he absorbs another responsibility
🔋Become depleted — fatigue and quiet frustration build
🗣️Promise to speak next time
🔁Stay quiet again
Silence gave Marcus relief in the moment, but the relief kept returning him to the same overloaded pattern.
S — Speak

Speaking Did Not Mean Becoming Someone Else

Speak: Find your voice and express what your heart truly needs with clarity and grace.

Marcus did not need to become forceful, confrontational, or highly expressive. He needed to make important information visible.

“I can help, but I need to understand which priority comes first.”
“My current workload is full. What would you like me to delay if I take this on?”
“I have been managing this, but it is no longer sustainable.”

Speak does not mean

  • Accusing
  • Controlling
  • Demanding agreement
  • Saying everything the moment you feel it

It does mean

  • Telling the truth
  • Naming what needs clarification
  • Communicating capacity
  • Speaking respectfully enough for others to respond
Speak gave Marcus a way to communicate reality without demanding the outcome.
Snap-Back Check™

Interrupt the Automatic “Yes”

Pause → Identify → Remember → Respond → Reset

⏸️
Pause: Marcus does not immediately say yes. He gives himself enough space to consider what the request will require.
🔎
Identify: He notices his workload, competing priorities, frustration, the urge to avoid discomfort, and uncertainty about what he is actually responsible for carrying.
✝️
Remember: God has given Marcus both a steady spirit and a voice. Biblical wisdom does not require him to choose between truth and peace.
💬
Respond: “I can help with this, but I need some clarity about my current priorities. If I take this on, what needs to come off my plate?”
🌱
Reset: Marcus moves forward using the clarified priorities rather than silently carrying an agreement he never honestly made.
A Different Response

He Used His Voice Without Losing His Calm

When Marcus was asked to lead another project, his first impulse was still: “Just say okay.”

He checked the six responsibilities already in his notebook and said, “I can help with the project, but before I take responsibility for it, I think we need to talk about my current priorities.”

His supervisor was surprised, not angry. They reviewed the workload. Some assignments stayed, others were reassigned, and one deadline moved.

Truth in Love

“Instead, speaking the truth in love...”
— Ephesians 4:15 (NIV)

Reflection: What truth needs to be spoken here, and how can you express it with love?

Heavenly Father, give me wisdom to recognize what needs to be said and courage to say it with grace. Guard me from resentment, avoidance, and harshness. Help me communicate honestly, listen well, and trust You with what happens after I speak. Teach me to use the voice You have given me in a way that honors You and others. Amen.
