When You Believe in Jesus but Still Struggle to Trust Him

Elena believed Jesus loved her. But disappointment had quietly taught part of her heart to stay guarded—even with Him.

Stage Three — Learning to Trust Jesus
“I know Jesus is faithful. Why does part of me still feel afraid to trust Him?”
Elena · Learning to Trust Jesus
The third invitation:
Elena had not stopped believing in Jesus. But belief and trust were not feeling like the same thing.
Stage Three invited her to know His heart more clearly.
The Story

Her Faith Was Real. So Was Her Hesitation.

Elena had followed Jesus for years. She prayed, worshiped, served, and believed Scripture. Then her marriage ended despite years of prayer.

A quiet question began forming: “What if I trust Him again and everything still falls apart?”

She never stopped believing in God. Stage Two had helped her understand where some of the fear came from.

Now Elena faced a different question: What did trusting Jesus mean when she could not guarantee what He would allow next?
Session Four — Is Jesus Safe?

Pain Had Become a Lens

Elena realized she sometimes expected Jesus to respond the way wounded relationships and painful circumstances had taught her to expect.

Pain whispered

  • “Don't trust too much.”
  • “Don't hope too much.”
  • “Protect yourself from another disappointment.”

Scripture showed Jesus welcoming

  • Weary people
  • Wounded people
  • Fearful people
  • Questioning people
  • People who had failed
Stage Three did not begin by asking Elena to force herself to trust Jesus. It invited her to know the Jesus revealed in Scripture more clearly.
Session Five — Resting with Jesus

Trust Did Not Begin with Trying Harder

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
— Matthew 11:28 (NIV)

Jesus was not saying, “Work harder until you feel safe enough to trust Me.” He was saying, “Come.”

Set Something Down

Elena named one burden she had been trying to solve alone.

Remain

She stayed with Jesus without demanding an immediate answer.

Receive

She allowed Scripture's picture of His gentleness to matter.

Rest

Not because uncertainty disappeared—but because she did not have to resolve it before coming to Him.

Session Six — When We Finally Recognize Jesus

His Presence Had Not Begun When Elena Noticed It

Elena reflected on the road to Emmaus. The disciples walked with Jesus before they recognized Him. Their awareness changed. His presence had not.

She still had questions about what happened. She was not going to invent explanations for why painful things occurred. But she could notice places where she had experienced:

Recognizing God's faithfulness did not answer every “why.” It helped Elena see that unanswered questions were not proof that Christ had abandoned her.
“I did not finally make Jesus present. I was beginning to recognize that He had been walking with me.”
Session Seven — Entrusting Our Lives to Jesus

Knowing His Heart Invited a Response

Elena had spent this stage asking who Jesus really was. Now another question emerged:

“What am I willing to place into His hands?”

Not because she suddenly knew how everything would turn out. Not because what mattered had stopped mattering. But because she was learning who was holding it.

She chose one thing: her fear about the future.

“Jesus, I do not know what comes next. But I am willing to place this fear into Your hands today.”
Entrusting something to Jesus did not mean Elena stopped caring about the outcome. It meant the outcome no longer had to be controlled before she could walk with Him.
Trust in a Real Moment

When Fear Came Back

A few days later Elena found herself thinking about the future again:

“What if something else goes wrong?”
“What if I make the wrong decision?”
“What if trusting God still leads somewhere painful?”

For a moment Elena wondered, “Did I not really trust Him?”

Then she remembered: fear returning did not erase the trust she had already practiced.

“Jesus, this fear is here again. I still don't know what will happen. I'm bringing it back to You.”
Trust was not becoming the absence of fear. It was becoming Elena's repeated choice to turn toward Christ when fear returned.
Walking with God This Week

Learning His Heart in Daily Life

When fear shapes what she believes

Return to Scripture.
“What does God's Word show me about Jesus here?”

When she notices herself grasping for control

Open her hands.
“Lord, this matters to me, and I am placing it before You again.”

At the end of the day

Notice faithfulness.
“Where did I recognize Christ's presence or care today?”

What am I holding tightly today that I am willing to bring honestly before Jesus?
Scripture · Reflection · Prayer

Jesus Had Not Promised Elena a Predictable Road

He had promised something more foundational: His presence.

“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”
— Hebrews 13:5 (NIV)

Reflection: Where are you tempted to measure Jesus' trustworthiness by whether life turns out the way you hoped?

Lord Jesus, thank You for meeting me with patience as I learn to trust You. Where pain has shaped the way I see You, help me return to the truth of Your character revealed in Your Word. Teach me to come when I am weary, remain with You when I do not understand, and recognize Your presence even when the road is unclear. I bring You what I cannot control and place it into Your hands again today. When fear returns, help me turn toward You rather than away from You. Keep teaching me to know Your heart and walk with You in trust. Amen.
